It’s something of a surprise that Lamia, one of the darkest, brooding and powerful Perth bands in the early 90’s has produced not one, but two solo artists with a heavy bent towards dark country. The first of these is Pete Stone (now playing with the Assistance, featuring members of Spank and Book of Funk), but Dead Pilot sees guitarist Andrew McCubbin step up to the plate and give a hefty swing.
Currently based in Melbourne, McCubbin has pieced together an accomplished release which depends more on discovery and appreciation rather than explosive attention-getting antics.

Often slow and steady, it’s easy to imagine McCubbin competing with the trams, riding through Melbourne on a horse with no name. If you want the thrill of recognition while checking out new music, head to the listening booth and check out his cover of Gouge Away. If it seems to be your cup of tea, backtrack to Universal One a soft ballad that should cinch the deal for you. Dead Pilot may be a sleeper, but there’s some worthy dreams to be found within.
